Mount Athos - visit one of the most significant Orthodox monastery centers
Mount Athos or Holy Mountain (Agio Oros), also known as “the garden of the Virgin Mary”, occupies the third peninsula of Halkidiki. It blends jaw-dropping natural beauty with architectural interest, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Athos was a giant, the son of Gaia and Uranus. According to mythology, Athos dropped a rock against the Gods of Olympus, but eventually, it fell on the third peninsula of Halkidiki. The area’s summit took its name after the giant. According to another story, Athos was hiding on the Holy Mountain during the war against the Gods and used the locals' help. After discovering him, Poseidon threw a rock that buried the giant and took his name ever since.
Mount Athos is one of the most famous destinations for religious tourism. It is accessible exclusively to men, while women and kids can only cruise around the area.
There are 20 monasteries on the peninsula, 17 Greek, 1 Russian, 1 Serbian, and 1 Bulgarian. There are also multiple skites kellia, and kalives. Monastery Esfigmenou, Monastery Vatopediou, Monastery Megistis Lavras, and Monastery Simonos Petras are some of the most famous monasteries.
